NIKE VS ADIDAS

Nike and Adidas crusade for kit out the French national football team from 2011 to 2018.

Nike, new France's national soccer team : stake and difference of treatment into the press

Nike and Adidas are two of the biggest sport suppliers. At the February 22, France’s national soccer team announced Nike will be his new supplier for an amount of 42,7 million euros per year from 2011 to 2018.This news impressed a lot on Adidas because it was on the place since 37 years.

Most of the articles published about this topic are extract from business news.
The three articles I choice to get onto came out at the same date : Friday February 22, the announce of substitution by Nike.

The way to treat this news in those three articles could be analysed.
On the one hand, CNN money article’s title is just informative, Adidas is not named and we are informed about the amount Nike will fund into France’s national soccer team equipment. The article has been written without visible opinion. It is a descriptive one.
On the other hand, The Oregonian and Bloomberg article’s titles use stronger terms and named Adidas. Those articles are not just descriptive about the fact Nike will be the new Les Bleus’ supplier. Indeed, people like the president of the Nike brand or an analyst are interviewed and named in the Bloomberg’s article, and men from the French Football Federation in both of articles. Moreover, they write about other brands and contracts like if this fact was a pretext to talk about other sponsor’s contracts.

To conclude, we can note a same fact can be treat differently according to the journalist or the newspaper publishing the article. A contract like a sponsor one has an important stake to the supplier who get it but even to one who lose it. A big amount is invested and it is an opportunity to the supplied team and, most of all, to the brand’s fame.

Nike Ousts Adidas as French Soccer Team's Sponsor

Feb. 22, 2008 (Bloomberg) -- Nike Inc., the world's largest maker of athletic shoes, ousted Adidas AG as uniform supplier to France's national soccer team, breaking up a 37-year relationship.

The new contract starts in 2011 and runs through 2018, Jean-Pierre Escalettes, head of the French Football Federation, said today at a press conference in Paris. Nike will pay 42.7 million euros ($63 million) annually for 7 1/2 years for the rights, and may make further payments based on France's performance in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.

Nike seeks to topple Adidas as the top maker of soccer apparel by the 2010 World Cup. Sporting-goods companies compete for sponsorships to boost revenue by selling replica jerseys, and place their logos on team gear. Nike, which supplies Brazil's national soccer team, tried last year to end Adidas's five-decade status as uniform sponsor for the German national team.

``It hurts the image, but I wouldn't overestimate the negative impact on the Adidas brand,'' Tim Burkhardt, an analyst at Landesbank Baden-Wuerttemberg in Stuttgart, Germany, said in an interview. Burkhardt, who recommend investors buy Adidas shares, sees support for the company as it repurchases stock.

In addition to Nike and Herzogenaurach, Germany-based Adidas, the contract was contested by French sports company Airness. ``These were three offers of high quality, and there was only the price to separate them,'' Escalettes said.

Nike rose 27 cents to $60.59 at 4:01 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares declined 5.7 percent this year. Adidas fell 50 cents, or 1.2 percent, to 42.54 euros in Germany.

Adidas Contract
Adidas, Europe's biggest sporting-goods maker, is paying 10 million euros a year under its current contract, which began in 2004, Escalettes said.

``It's a great day for Nike football,'' Charlie Denson, president of the Nike brand, wrote in an e-mailed statement. The Beaverton, Oregon-based company also makes uniforms for Arsenal and Manchester United of England's Premier League.

Adidas outfits soccer clubs from England's Liverpool to Los Angeles Galaxy, whose roster includes star midfielder David Beckham. The company replaced Umbro Plc as uniform supplier to Premier League club Chelsea in 2006 and is set to take over this year from Admiral as sponsor to England's national cricket team.

France won the World Cup as host nation in 1998 and lost the final to Italy in the most recent competition in Germany in 2006.

Nike agreed to acquire Umbro Plc, which supplies uniforms to England's national team. The 285 million pound ($567 million) purchase, which won Umbro shareholder approval last month, may be completed by April.

French soccer team drops Adidas, makes $506M deal with Nike

PARIS, Friday February 22, 2008-- The French national soccer team will end its long sponsorship deal with Adidas in 2011 in favor of a $506 million contract with Nike.

The French soccer federation said Friday the American sports equipment firm outbid Adidas and French company Airness, promising to pay $63.4 million per year until the end of the 2017-2018 season. The federation will get about half that amount in the final year.

Adidas has sponsored the national team, called Les Bleus, since 1972.

Nike, which has its headquarters in Beaverton, has made a major push into the world's most popular sport, vowing to become soccer's top brand by the next world cup.

It recently bought out England's Umbro PLC for $566 million in a deal expected to be approved next month. Umbro's soccer apparel, footwear and equipment is sold in more than 90 countries and supplies uniforms to the national teams of England, Ireland, Sweden and Norway, six English Premier League teams and more than 100 other professional teams globally.

The French soccer federation said it switched suppliers on the bid alone.
"For French soccer and those who will come after us, the federal council owed itself to go with the highest bidder," said Jacques Lambert, director general of the French soccer federation.
A higher bid has not always been enough for Nike.

German soccer authorities rejected a $680 million offer from Nike and extended its contract with Adidas at roughly half the value last year. Adidas is a German company with its U.S. headquarters in Portland.

Les Bleus will wear Adidas gear at this year's European Championship and at the 2010 World Cup if it qualifies.

Nike to supply French football kit in 2011-18 in 320 mln eur deal

PARIS, Feb. 22, 2008 (Thomson Financial delivered by Newstex) -- The French football federation (FFF) said it has chosen Nike (NYSE:NKE) Inc. to supply the kit for the French national team for the 2011-18 period in a deal worth 320 mln eur.

Nike won the contract in the face of rival offers from French firm Airness and its main rival Adidas AG (OOTC:ADDYY) , which is the current supplier of the French team's kit.

The FFF said Nike made the best financial offer and exceeded the minimum price set by the football authorities.Nike is to pay an average of 42.66 mln eur per season, with the contract covering seven-and-a-half seasons from Jan 2011 until the end of the 2017-18 season.

In addition, the US group is to provide 2.5 mln eur worth of equipment per season and unspecified bonuses linked to the performances of the French team at the World Cup and European Championship.Under the existing contract for 2004-2010, Adidas pays 10 mln eur per season. The German group has been the French team's kit supplier since 1972.

Nike's investment in the French team also far exceeds the approximately 13 mln eur per season it currently pays to supply Brazil's national kit.
